Gilbert-Lee-Mattox

Gilbert Lee Mattox, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 6, 2024, in Springfield, Tennessee, at the age of 84.

Born on November 10, 1939, in Cullman, Alabama, to the late Dave and Lillie Smith Mattox, Gilbert lived a life rich with dedication, adventure, and love.

Gilbert spent a significant portion of his life working in the railroad industry. He began his career with L&N in 1959 and later retired from the CSX Railroad, where he served in the Communication Department. His commitment to his work extended beyond his daily duties; he took immense pride in his role as a Legislative Representative for the Transportation Communication Union, making trips to Washington, D.C. to advocate for the retirement security of railroad workers.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gilbert was a loving and kind man who cherished spending time with family and friends. He especially looked forward to visits from his grandchildren, Carter Mattox, Savanna (Lucas) Magalhaes, and Anna Ringer. Their time together was filled with joy and laughter, creating memories that will be cherished by all.

In his leisure, Gilbert was an avid hunter and fisherman, appreciating the beauty of the outdoors and the thrill of the chase. His passions outside of work added richness to his life and provided an opportunity for shared experiences with loved ones. He was a dedicated member for over 50 years to the Greenbrier Masonic Lodge #753 where he served as a Past Master and Past Patron of the Eastern Star.

Gilbert is survived by his beloved wife, Lynda Mattox of 63 years; their children, Todd (Kim) Mattox and Lee Ann Mattox; as well as his cherished grandchildren. He also leaves behind a long-time friend, Norman Pater.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Lille Mattox, and his siblings: Coy Mattox, Bob Mattox, Lala Dean Clay, and Opal Mattox.

A visitation to honor Gilbert will take place on September 10, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Springfield Memorial Gardens, Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Springfield, Tennessee.
