vehicle theft

Following several vehicle thefts in Springfield over the past few months, the City of Springfield Police Department would like to remind the public not to leave their vehicles running while unattended.

Leaving a vehicle unattended and running is not only unlawful in Tennessee (Tennessee Code Annotated 55-8-162), but leaving a vehicle running unattended allows easy access for a potential vehicle theft to occur. Vehicles equipped with remote start are exempt from the law as long as the doors are locked and the keys are not inside of the vehicle.

Please lock your vehicle when unattended and try not to leave valuable items such as money, electronics or firearms in your vehicle overnight. Also, a great tip for the holiday season is to not leave gifts or packages inside an unattended vehicle especially when the items may be in plain view.

Thieves often target packages delivered to residences and businesses that are left unattended. If you have packages that are delivered please make certain that they are removed from sight in a timely manner.

If you observe any type of suspicious activity, please contact the Springfield Police Department immediately by calling (615) 384-8422 or (615) 384-4911. With your help and cooperation, we can greatly reduce the number of stolen vehicles, thefts from vehicles, and thefts of other property in our city.
Remember to follow these tips:

✅ Lock Your Vehicle
✅ Secure Your Valuables
✅ Take Your Keys With You
✅ Be Aware of Your Surroundings

If you observe any type of suspicious activity, please contact the Springfield Police Department immediately by calling (615) 384-8422 or (615) 384-4911.
