Dan Black has retired after 55 years in Tennessee education, including 27 years serving on the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s (TSSAA) Legislative Council.
Black served nine three-year terms representing schools in nine West Tennessee counties and was elected Legislative Council president each year. He also held leadership roles on the TSSAA Board of Control.
“Athletics, to me, is a very important part of school activities and I’ve just enjoyed working with people on the TSSAA Legislative Council and the Board and folks in the TSSAA office,” said Black. “It wasn’t much of a job; something I enjoyed doing most of the days.”
During his career, Black coached baseball, basketball and golf, served as an athletic director for 30 years and was principal of Maury City High School for 14 years before the school merged with another system.
He won 368 games as a basketball coach and led teams from Maury City and Ripley to the state basketball tournament.
Black was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2015, 20 years after his father received the same honor. TSSAA Executive Director Mark Reeves praised Black’s leadership and commitment to the association.
“His steady leadership, thoughtful perspective, and commitment to the association have been invaluable as TSSAA has navigated some of the most challenging issues facing the organization,” Reeves said.
