The Stokes Brown Public Library will host a free Women’s Self-Defense Course this August. The course will include four classes, taking place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, August 1st
  • Thursday, August 3rd
  • Tuesday, August 15th
  • Thursday, August 17th

Here’s what you need to know about the course:

  • Class time is from 5:00pm – 7:45pm
  • Participation in all four classes is mandatory to complete the course
  • Space is limited to 20 people. Please call the library at 615-384-5123 to be placed on the sign-up sheet.
  • Patrons as young as 12 can sign up, but please note the lessons are being taught via the R.A.D. (R@pe, Aggression, Defense) System, so parental discretion is advised.
  • Through the R.A.D. program, the course will teach women awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance while progressing to the basics of hands-on defense training. The hands-on defense training consists of (but is not limited to):
    – Hand Defense (punches, hammer fists, elbows, etc.)
    – Lower Body Defense (knee, kicks, etc.)
    – Ground Defense
    – Choke Holds
  • The hands-on portion of the class can be a little physically demanding. If someone is not comfortable with doing a specific technique, they do not have to do it.
  • One of the rules for the class is NO MEN are allowed to be present. There are several reasons for this which will be explained during class.

The Stokes Brown Public Library is located at 405 White St, Springfield, TN.
