Springfield Gas Department Begins Annual Leak Survey

224

On Monday, May 22, 2023 the Springfield Gas Department began their annual leak survey. It is anticipated that the survey will conclude within 5 weeks.

The Springfield Gas Department will be conducting a quality control survey of the natural gas system to ensure public safety and the proper operation of the gas lines and meters. Gas mains and business districts are surveyed annually and customer services are surveyed once every five years. This is part of a routine safety practice required by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

A typical leak survey is performed by a technician who uses a leak-detecting device and walks or drives over the gas main located in the street or alley, then to your gas meter. The technician will require access to a portion of your yard, depending on the distance and location of the service line and meter. A typical survey does not require digging and generally lasts a few minutes.
