Nashville Sounds: Win 3-1

The Nashville Sounds hosted the Gwinnett Stripers again last night as the 6-game series continued. Both teams’ pitcher must have gotten their rest the night before because they came out ready to play. Eric Lauer took the mound for Nashville and set his career-high in strikeouts with 12 in just 5 innings pitched. The first run didn’t cross the plate until the sixth inning when Jace Peterson hit an RBI single, scoring Keston Hiura.

In the next half-inning, the Stripers would tie the ballgame when Travis Demerrite homered. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, Keston Hiura hit a 2-run home run to give the Sounds a 3-1 lead. That was all that was needed as the Sounds held on for the win. Torres-Costa was credited with the win, his third of the year, and Wiegel got the save out of the bullpen.

Atlanta Braves: Loss 6-4

The Atlanta Braves took on the Pittsburgh Pirates at home last night. Before fans had a chance to get settled in there was already a home run by Jacob Stallings of the Pirates to put his team ahead 2-0. In the bottom of the second inning, the Braves would snatch the lead though as Contreras hit a 3-run home run to put the Braves ahead 3-2.

The next run would come from the Pirates as they tied the game in the sixth inning off of a Reynolds solo home run. The Braves tacked on a run in the bottom half of the sixth when Dansby Swanson homered to give the Braves a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Frazier hit an RBI single, and things were knotted up again at 4-4. The game would head into extra innings as neither team was able to get a go-ahead run after that. Then in the top of the tenth inning, the Pirates’ Newman hit an RBI single to get a lead. The next batter would hit a SAC fly to plate the second run in the inning. The Braves would fall 6-4 after they could not push across a run in the bottom of the tenth. Webb was given the loss on the mound.

Cincinnati Reds: Loss 19-4

It was a tough series for the Reds as they fell yesterday to the San Francisco Giants, which ended the series with the Reds getting swept. Longoria got things started in the first inning as he homered for the Giants. Then the flood gates opened in the third inning. 7 straight batters reached base in some form or fashion and the final of those 7 was Duggar who hit a grand slam to make it 8-0. The bleeding didn’t stop though as after two strikeouts and a walk, Ruf hit a 2-run home run to make it a 9-run inning for the Giants and give them a 10-0 lead.

The Reds had an uphill battle and they had to do it one run at a time, one plate appearance at a time. Castellanos helped get the Reds offense going with an RBI single, but that was the only run they could get to come across home plate. They were on the board at least, but still trailing 10-1.

The next scoring would come in the fifth inning. Unfortunately, it was more scoring on the Giants run column. They added 4 more runs including a 3-run home run from Crawford. They led 14-1.

The Giants would plate another 5 runs before the game was over while the Reds only managed to get 3 more to cross the plate. Crawford had 6 RBIs total in the game, along with Duggar’s 4 RBIs off the grand slam and the series came to an end with the final game being a massacre of 19-4.

College Baseball:

Vanderbilt CommodoresWin 4-2 vs Kentucky

Vanderbilt hosted the Wildcats of Kentucky in game one of their final series of regular season play. Vandy scored the first run in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Bradfield Jr. Then in the bottom of the fourth Keegan hit a solo home run that gave the Commodores a 2-0 lead.

The sixth inning was when things got interesting as Rhodes hit a 2-run home run to tie the game late. Neither team managed to get a run to score until the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, LaNeve stepped up to the plate and left the batter’s box a hero. He hit a solo home run to win the game. Luke Murphy was the winning pitcher for the Commodores and Daniel Harper was credited with the loss.

Tennessee VolunteersW 10-4 South Carolina Gamecocks

The Tennessee Volunteers were on the road for game one in the final series of the regular season. They traveled to take on #15 South Carolina. The Vols got a SAC fly in the third inning to start the scoring off, but it was the fourth inning that was their breakout inning. They plated 6 runs in the inning to go up 7-0. Lipcius and Ferguson both homered in the inning while Derkay added an RBI double and Pavolony an RBI single.

The Gamecocks would tack on in the bottom of the fourth with a 2-run homer from Clarke. They would add more runs later in the game when Eyster hit a 2-run home run in the eighth inning. The Vols added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth when they plated 3 runs with help of an RBI triple from Gilbert. In all, the Volunteers won 10-4 and Chad Dallas picked up his 9th win of the year. Sean Hunley got the save and the Vols moved to 41-13 on the season.
