Rutherford County Schools has named Roscoe Sanders as its new Assistant Safety Director, bringing 20 years of law enforcement experience and more than a decade as a School Resource Officer to the role.

Sanders will work alongside Safe Schools Director Steve McClanahan, district leaders, principals and other school safety partners to help maintain and improve safe learning environments for students, employees and parents.

Sanders has served with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office since 2006 and became a School Resource Officer in 2012. He most recently served as an SRO at Siegel High School.

He also spent 11 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and has worked as a law enforcement instructor. His training includes active shooter response, Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training and Emergency Medical Technician certification through Middle Tennessee State University.

Rutherford County Schools Director Jimmy Sullivan said Sanders’ experience will be a valuable addition to the district’s safety team.

“Mr. Sanders has served many years in law enforcement and the military,” Sullivan said. “Our schools have remained safe because of a robust partnership with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, and with Mr. Sanders’ extensive background as a School Resource Officer at one of our comprehensive high schools, he will be an invaluable addition to our safety team.”

Sanders said he is excited to take on the new position as Rutherford County continues to grow.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to step into the role of Assistant Safety Director for Rutherford County Schools,” Sanders said. “As our county continues to experience historic growth, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our dedicated county workforce and the community we serve is more critical than ever.”

McClanahan said Sanders stood out during the interview process for his calm and professional approach, as well as his experience working in both patrol and school settings.

Sanders will begin his new role on Sept. 14. He succeeds former Assistant Safety Director Sean Martin, who recently accepted a position with a law enforcement training organization.
