According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers claim to be bonding agents working for the agency and tell victims that a family member or loved one is in jail. The caller then demands money through Venmo, Apple Pay or other electronic payment apps, falsely claiming the payment is needed to keep the inmate from being placed in the general population.

The Sheriff’s Office stressed that the calls are fraudulent and noted that bonding agents are not employed by the agency. The department also emphasized that it will never call residents to demand money or request payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, gift cards or any other payment app.

Residents who receive one of these calls are urged not to send money and not to provide personal or financial information to the caller.

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to share the warning with family, friends and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims.
