Sue Ethel (Clinard) Starks

Sue Clinard Starks, age 84, died Tuesday, October 12, 2021 in the home where she grew up.

Her service will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 11:00 am with Dr. Steve Freeman officiating with Caleb Starks, Clint Morris, Jesse Smith, Gary Minnis, Patrick Mann, and Houston Ramsey serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-8 pm then again on Wednesday from 10 am until the time of service.

Sue was born on December 27, 1936 in the Barren Plains community, the only child of the late Charlie and Lillie Baldwin Clinard. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Cecil Starks.

She was raised on the farm and as a young girl started a Jersey dairy herd. She was involved in the 4-H Club and won numerous prizes on her dairy, sewing, canning, and food preparation projects. She was a 1954 graduate of Springfield High School and on October 28th of that year, she and Cecil were married at Barren Plains Baptist Church. They became parents to two children, Vince and his wife Peggy and Suzanne and her husband Gary, all of Barren Plains.

The hard work ethic she learned as a young girl stayed with her throughout her life. Sue was known by some as the hardest working woman they ever knew. She held a variety of jobs during her life, but she was foremost a dedicated wife, mother, and daughter. Sue always enjoyed being involved in her church and most recently moved back to her home church, Barren Plains Baptist. She loved singing the old hymns and didn’t need the eyes that had failed her because she knew them by heart. Sewing was a favorite hobby, making clothes for her daughter and granddaughters until she wasn’t able. She liked sports and said some of her favorite times were watching her grandchildren playing in middle and high school sports. Her giving heart touched not only her own family but everyone she knew.

“Mama Sue” will be missed by so many especially her children, grandchildren, Misty (Clint) Morris, Caleb (Heather) Starks, Becky (Houston) Ramsey and Katie (Patrick) Mann and her great-grandchildren, Jesse and Gracie Smith, Joty Reed, Paige, Adison and Zane Starks, Preston and Carter Ramsey and Brogan, Avery and Livie Mann.
