Joe Ed Fugate, age 84, of Greenbrier, passed from this life on Friday, April 22, 2022, at Skyline Medical Center.

Mr. Fugate was born October 4, 1937, in Sneedville to the late John B. and Nina Gibson Fugate.

He retired from the U.S. Army, with twenty years of service. While serving, he was the recipient of several medals and commendations, including 2 Bronze Service Stars, the German Shoot Cord, and the Purple Heart.

Mr. Fugate also worked as a truck driver for J&E Trucking. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the VFW, and the DAV. Mr. Fugate loved fishing, hunting, listening to bluegrass music, and especially loved cutting firewood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Brenda Redmond Fugate, by his stepson: Cecil Ray Dean, and by his siblings: Walford Fugate and Elsie Yackle.

Mr. Fugate is survived by his wife: Shirley Wooden Fugate of Greenbrier, by his children: Lisa (Steve) Bond of Pembroke, KY, Diana Hague of Smyrna, John (Brenda) Fugate of Adams, Ronald (Frances) Fugate of Greenbrier, Jennessa Fugate Elkins of Nashville, and Julie (Tommy) Malcolm of Murfreesboro, by his stepsons: Robert Earl Dean of Greenbrier, and Marshall Flynn Dean of Los Angeles, CA, by his siblings: Naoma Campbell, Velma Trent, Marvie Watts, Wanda Mackey, Reba Frazier, and Wilma Wilder, and by his 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 28th at 1:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Reverend Jack Evans and Reverend Chad Phelan officiating. Interment will follow in the Owens Chapel Cemetery with full Military honors. Pallbearers will be Timmy Fugate, Tyler Fugate, Gabe Fugate, John Foxx Fugate, Tommy Malcolm, Stephen Howerton, and Thomas Fugate. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
