James Robert “Bob” Finney, age 79 of Springfield, TN, passed away at Skyline Medical Center on December 8, 2022.

Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Artist, Bicycle enthusiast

Bob was born on March 29, 1943, to the late Clarence and Elsie Weaver Finney in Indianapolis, Indiana.

From a young age and until his passing, Bob loved to build, to bike and to be with family. The second of ten children, Bob moved to Nashville from the family farm in Coffee County Tennessee. After graduating from Harris School of Art, he began a career in publishing.

Bob was an early adopter of desktop computing in his work as a layout design artist for the United Methodist Publishing House and many of his co-workers relied on his technical advice and his teaching.

He met and married the love of his life, Shirley Garrett, in 1971 and raised a family in Robertson County. Throughout the 50 years of their marriage, Bob and Shirley traveled widely.

He loved images and photography and went from setting up darkrooms all over Nashville in the 1960s to taking digital photos of all his many adventures.

Over the years Bob built houses, furniture of all kinds, boats, toys, and crafted hundreds of turned wooden bowls. He was a master carpenter.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Shirley Finney.

Bob is survived by his sons, Robert Garrett (Amanda) Finney and James Alan (Elizabeth Luckey) Finney; grandsons, Mason Garrett Finney, James Layton Finney and Walker Bennett Finney; siblings, Edward Finney, Bill (Daphne) Finney, David Finney, Sue (Crawford) Fortune, Marlene Finney, Carolyn Finney, Colleen (Robert) Fultz, Betty (Robert) Quillen, Barbara (Scott) Dawson and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at 3 pm at Springfield Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 pm until the time of service.
