The City of Springfield is thrilled to announce that the Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to award a $499,995.16 bid to Great Southern Recreation for a new playground at Garner Street Park during their September 17, 2024, meeting. Thanks in part to a Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation’s Recreation Resources Division Local Parks and Recreation Fund Grant (LPRF) of $500,000, the playground at Garner Street Park will undergo a complete replacement.

The new playground will feature a range of innovative accessibility features, ensuring that children of all abilities can play together. This will be Springfield’s second accessible playground, following the 2019 playground installation at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. A standout element of the new design will be a replica of Springfield’s historic clocktower, adding a distinct local flair and a sense of heritage to the park. Other exciting features will include a wheelchair accessible glider, swings, a climbing structure, shade sails, and more.

Construction of the playground is anticipated to be completed in the spring of 2025, weather permitting. During construction, park visitors are encouraged to explore other amenities at Garner Street Park and utilize alternative playgrounds nearby at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and J. Travis Price Park. The Springfield Parks and Recreation Department is committed to ensuring that the community has access to exceptional recreational facilities for years to come. Prior additions to Garner Street Park include the Central Bark Dog Park and a skate park. Upcoming projects at Garner Street Park include the addition of two pickleball courts and restroom renovations, both scheduled for completion by spring 2025
