The Pierson Family created an inviting and unique place when they opened The StoryBook Cottage more than a year ago in Greenbrier, Tennessee. The bookstore and coffeehouse celebrate their love of great books, delicious coffee, and community. A theatre in the bookstore provides a performance venue, and space for special pay what you can story times on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. More Business News
In December, Storybook Cottage hosted Saturday Storytime book readings of “The Night Before Christmas,” other books they have read include “Bedtime for Baby Shark” and “Elmo Pretends He’s a Chicken!”
Themed Rooms and Beverages
Each room of the bookstore has a different theme – romance, mystery, children’s books, and more – that is tied to a book. For example, the romance room is decorated like Bridgerton, and the Young Adult book room’s theme is Hunger Games.
Just as the thoughtfully decorated, immersive themed rooms are tied to books, so are the drinks in the café. Some of the themed drinks include the Assassin’s Blade Latte, Baker Street Brew, and Frozen Ambrosia Frappe. The cafe offers sugar free flavors sweetened with Monk Fruit, as well as almond milk, oat milk, and 2% milk options. Baked goods made by Shy Girl Baking Company are also offered.
Providing an Opportunity to Connect
“[W]e invite guests to slow down, dream a little, and find themselves within the pages – and people – around them,” the Piersons said online.
The store’s vision is “To create a haven where stories, creativity, and connection come to life – a place where every cup, every book, and every conversation inspires imagination and belonging. To make every visit feel like stepping into your favorite chapter – comforting, inspiring, and a little bit magical.”
“Such an awesome place,” exclaimed one reviewer. “Greenbrier has needed something like this for years. [I] highly recommend stopping in to grab a coffee, and browse the book selections. Don’t forget to push the buttons you see throughout the rooms for a surprise.”
Offers Ability to Purchase Audio and Real Books Online
To provide audio books to their customers, StoryBook Cottage has partnered with Libro.com. Similar to Audible, it allows users to redeem audiobooks for credits and allows them to purchase additional audiobooks a la carte. While the pricing and format match Audible’s, Libro supports the store rather than Amazon. Bookshop.org works the same way, allowing the store to get credit for customers ordering or pre-ordering both books and e-books.
Helping the Community
Proceeds from all of the used paperbacks and hardbacks they sell in store goes to the Isaiah 117 House in Springfield, Tennessee. They take used book donations to support this program, but they do not buy used books. However, they do support select independent authors and artists. Due to limited shelf space, they ask potential authors to fill out a form to help them get to know the author and their book or books. They also have a form for artists.
New Theatre Company Offers Performances
Storybook Cottage Co-Owner and Store Manager Kate Pierson has also started a new theatre company in the business. It has been a dream of hers for years, that she never expected to happen. Their first production was a cabaret that took place in early May. The next production, Daddy Long Legs by Paul Gordon, will take place August 28, 29 and 30.
Providing Community Event Opportunities
Other community events and opportunities they provide include author book signings, crafting classes, trivia nights, Dungeons and Dragons tournaments, and on June 27, Mid-Summer Market featuring local artisans, crafters and makers with free admission.
The store can be rented for special events both during store hours and after closing. During store hours, rental is $90 per hour, however the store will still be open during the event. After store hours, the rental rate is $120 per hour. Contact the store at thestorybookcottagetn@gmail.com to make private event arrangements.
