Springfield Parks and Recreation will host its first-ever Garner Street Grind skateboard competition on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Garner Street Park, located at 200 N. Garner Street.
The free community event begins at 4:30 p.m. and will feature live music, vendors, food trucks, a free skate clinic and a skateboard competition.
Rocketown will lead a free skate clinic starting at 5:30 p.m. for skaters of all experience levels. No registration is required for the clinic.
The competition begins at 6 p.m. and is open to skaters ages 8 and older. Competitors will compete in beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions, with prizes awarded in each category. Pre-registration is required, and participants ages 17 and younger must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
All competitors must wear a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads while participating.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase from Stafford Sips Co., Prince Cheesesteaks and Lady Dawgs.
The event will take place at the city’s 6,000-square-foot skatepark, which opened in 2024 following community fundraising efforts led by the Kiwanis Club of Springfield. The park features street skating elements, a mini ramp and a signature sculpture created by local artist Adam Heffner and Maker Table.
