A Springfield man was killed in a head-on crash Thursday afternoon on Whites Creek Pike that also critically injured a 7-year-old child.
Nicholas J. Mulder, 73, was driving a 2019 Ford Fiesta northbound in the 7900 block of Whites Creek Pike around 5:20 p.m. when his vehicle crossed the double yellow line and struck a southbound 2015 Ford Escape, according to the preliminary investigation.
Mulder died at the scene.
A 7-year-old child riding in the Escape was critically injured. The Escape’s 25-year-old male driver and 26-year-old female front-seat passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All three were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Police said there were no signs of impairment by either driver and all occupants are believed to have been wearing seat belts.
The preliminary cause of the crash was determined to be Mulder’s failure to maintain his lane.
