Publix is recalling all lots of four frozen GreenWise organic berry products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O145:H28, a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness.
The recalled products were sold at Publix stores in Tennessee and seven other states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Publix says the products have already been removed from sale.
Customers should not eat the recalled berries and can either throw them away or return them to Publix for a full refund.
The recalled products are:
* GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce — UPC 41415-06453
* GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48-ounce — UPC 41415-12053
* GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10-ounce — UPC 41415-06753
* GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48-ounce — UPC 41415-12153
E. coli O145 can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that may contain blood and vomiting. While many people recover within about a week, the infection can sometimes lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney problems. Young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of complications.
The recall expands an earlier recall announced July 3 involving GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce, Lot 60401.
