Mary Margaret Smith (Nanny), 91, departed this world into the arms of Jesus on 8/10/2026. Born in Gallatin, TN, March 31, 1935 to Harold and Evelyn Willmore, she was preceded in death by her 1st husband of 18 years Robert (Bobby) Edwin McWhirter and her 2nd husband of 28 years, Billy Frank Smith. Also preceding her in death were sisters Ladye Belle Braley and Sandy Alexander and her brother Harold (Bud) Willmore, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her 8 children: Kathy Littleton (Dick), Mike McWhirter, Theresa Harrington (Paul), John McWhirter (April), Richard McWhirter (Amy), Billy Smith, Jr. (Elaine), Shan Smith (Susan), Melba Dowdy (Chuck), 18 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and her sister Sherrell Taulman (Ron) of Gallatin.
Her family was very important to her and she loved holding each new grandchild. She was a wonderful cook and baker (especially her chocolate chip cookies and chicken salad), loved growing flowers and likely saw more little league, middle and high school ball games than anyone in Montgomery County. A faithful member of 2nd Mile Church, she was an energetic volunteer whenever a call went out for help.
Mary Margaret was twice retired, 1st from The Clarksville Academy and later from Jack B.Turner and Assoc. She loved to stay busy.
Memorial contributions may be sent to 2nd Mile Church or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at 11:00 AM at the 2nd Mile Church with Rev. Cal Hampton and Pastor Nathaniel Edmondson officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 from 9:00 AM until the hour of service at the 2nd Mile Church, and Tuesday, August 18, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home. Burial will follow directly after the service at Crestview Memory Garden.
