ICE agents arrested six people Wednesday at the Robertson County General Sessions Courthouse after they appeared on driving without a license charges, WSMV4 reports.
The arrests occurred after eight individuals pleaded guilty and were directed to a hallway payment window, where agents moved in and took them into custody. Two people were later released, one of which was let go after agents learned there was no one present to take custody of her 15-year-old daughter.
Among those detained was Diego Gonzalez, who his wife says came to the U.S. seeking asylum from Mexico and has a pending 2027 immigration court date — he was later transferred to a detention center in Louisiana.
Judge Joel Perry, who presided over the court session, has not responded to questions about whether he had prior knowledge of the operation. A local attorney, speaking anonymously, told WSMV4 the Sheriff’s Office and courthouse have been cooperating with ICE for weeks, calling the operation “a trap” targeting people who showed up believing they were doing the right thing.
