Authorities have confirmed that human remains discovered in Sulphur Fork Creek have been positively identified, WSMV reports.
Springfield city officials say a human leg found in Sulphur Fork Creek last month has been identified as belonging to 68-year-old Joseph Frank Benton.
The remains were discovered on July 4 near the Robertson County Fairgrounds. On August 13, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation notified Springfield Police that DNA testing produced a preliminary match to Benton.
Authorities say the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s Office are now overseeing the investigation.
