Farmers Markets are as old as civilization. They can be traced back to ancient civilizations like Egypt and Mesopotamia. Farmers and artisans used them to sell their wares and produce along the Nile River to travelers passing through, according to Frisco Fresh Market. They began in North America in the 1600s. with European colonization. Since the 1990s, they have become especially popular.
The nature of farmers markets changed beginning in the middle of the twentieth century, mainly because of urbanization. Moving from produce and reseller markets to farm producer-only markets, they have only continued to grow with the farm-to-table movement.
What makes farmers markets special is that goods are fresh and seasonal. What is found in the market stalls in the spring are often different from the fall. Also, people have become more interested in where their food comes from, often bringing about relationships between farmers and their customers.
Robertson County offers a number of Farmers’ Markets that provide locally grown produce, meats, cheeses, and other food items. Some of the markets also allow artists and artisans to sell their products.
