Bobby Gordon Hendley, age 91 of Springfield, passed from this life peacefully at home. He was surrounded by his family after a life richly lived in kindness, faith, hope, and love on Sunday, April 20, 2025. The Hendley family lost a great man on Easter Sunday. Bobby was the only child born to the late Dee and Pauline Henry Hendley on May 12, 1933 in Springfield. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1951.
Bobby served his country in the United States Army, stationed at Ft. Riley Kansas Army Base and deployed to Germany. He was a lifelong member of Hopewell Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was married to the love of his life on June 9, 1954. He served on the board of Robertson Cheatham Farmers CO-OP and the Robertson County Farm Bureau.
Surviving him are his devoted wife of 70 years, Betty Sue Thorpe Hendley of Springfield; his four children, Mike Hendley (Kim) of Springfield, Sherry Brinkley (Tom Hulme) of Nashville, Janet Lehn (Bob) of Hendersonville, and Lisa Bellar (Dewayne) of Springfield; his seven grandchildren, Christa Colquitt (Dustin), Lindsey Head (Justin), Alicia LeBlanc (Jared), Aimee Adams (Bradley), Kendal Veith (John), Keith Head (Giselle), and Bryson Lehn (Linzy); and 20 great grandchildren.
He raised his family with Betty Sue on their farm for seventy years. Hopewell Baptist Church, farming, and family were the center of his life. His grandchildren and great grandchildren loved their “Gramps”. His son, Mike worked beside him on the farm and continues today. He will be remembered for his faith, kindness, integrity, and having a great love for his family and friends. He was very soft spoken and a man of few words but when he spoke people listened. He was a constant source of encouragement and inspiration. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, the UT Vols, and the Kansas City Chiefs football.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at 3:00 PM at Hopewell Baptist Church with Bro. Jim Woodard and Bro. Phil Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in Hopewell Cemetery with Bob Lehn, Dewayne Bellar, Tom Hulme, Bryson Lehn, Keith Head, Jim Marshall, Brian Tate, and Steve Tate serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Hopewell Senior Men’s Class, the Deacons of Hopewell Baptist Church, Welborn Smith, Sammy Cook, Larry Henry, and Phil Henry. Visitation will held at the church on Wednesday from 11 AM until the time of service.
Where there is love, there is great grief. We will miss him every day.
